Phase I Exhibition: Hanging Around

Space is an abstract concept. Irrespective of the shape, size, height or orientation of an object, it influences our spatial cognition, directly or indirectly, generally or specifically. Human defines spaces with different spatial relationships according to our daily experiences. In contrast, animals in the natural world have honed specialized senses for locating position and direction: bats and dolphins use echolocation, nocturnal birds the constellation, lobsters and sea turtles the magnetic field. Likewise, oceanic seabirds navigate home with olfactory clues, and insects use their feelers to wind their way. On that account, do humans also have the ability to survey space through non-visual perception?

We don’t need to rush to prove anything with scientific experiments. Instead, we can learn from the life skills of people with visual impairment. They use the white cane as an extension of their touch while utilizing their hearing for navigation, as well as the sense of smell, temperature, and humidity. Every small step taken by people with visual impairment is a giant leap to the perception of their five senses. In the latest edition of Touch Art Festival, let us start by “hanging around” to inspect the space we live in with creative thoughts and imaginations before ‘running errands’ in our city to dive into the creative process, broadening the definition and exploring the possibilities of an inclusive society.
